There is a particular pleasure in a road with no useful shortcut. It asks for patience, and then gives something back: a village square at the right hour, a view that was not on the map, a conversation that could not have been scheduled.
Our favorite journeys leave a little room around the plan. Not enough to feel unmoored, but enough to notice what is happening.
